PLAYER↴ Name: Shana Contact: Other Characters: N/A CHARACTER↴ Character Name: Yako Katsuragi Age: 17 Species: Human Canon: Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro (manga) Canon Point: Character Info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majin_Tantei_Nōgami_Neuro and http://nougamineuro.wikia.com/wiki/Yako_Katsuragi Yako is an empathetic person, first and foremost. She often assumes the best of people, even murderers, and has a history of bending to the will of others (particularly abusive demons). However, she can still be quite stubborn when she sets her mind on something. She makes friends easily, inspires loyalty, and tries her hardest not to be a burden. She has an amazing appetite, and eats ridiculous amounts of food. Despite her overall cheerful demeanor, the death of her father depresses her. Neuro gave her closure by identifying the culprit behind the crime—one of the very policemen investigating it—but months later, even just the sight of that 'culprit' is enough to disturb Yako to the point of fainting. The losses of Sasazuka and Honjou, later in the story, were the proverbial final straws that left her broken and grieving for a brief period where she shut out everybody, including her best friend. She blames herself for not being perceptive enough or acting quickly enough to prevent those deaths. Fumio Honjou, a genius who had been a close friend, was revealed to have been working for Sicks, the main villain of the Arc. Honjou helped Sicks set a trap that nearly killed Yako and Neuro, and lead to the death of Sasazuka. After this she confronts Honjou, who tells her of his admiration and connection to Sicks, before injecting a deadly fluid into his neck and jumping off a bridge. This scars Yako considerably. Her faith is soon restored when she is comforted by Aya, one of the criminals she had previously exposed, now broken out of prison. She finds a document from Honjou in the house he left her before taking his life. It contains a note apologizing, stating that "he couldn't betray that man in life, but could do so in death" and contained vital information on the enemy. This series of events ultimately strengthens her resolve to help. When Neuro left her deeply in debt, Yako was given the opportunity to reach a high-paying job or to rescue a child and didn't even think twice about throwing away her chance at repayment or her own safety. Yako does have a stiff backbone when properly riled. Multiple times, she is written off as a mere 'puppet' for Neuro, but Yako isn't merely cowed into submission; at a particularly stressful part of her life, Yako lashes out in anger and tells Neuro that she wishes they had never met, and the two part ways. When she realizes that she was wrong, she did some detective work on her own and returned to Neuro fully willing to accept any punishment he might dole out—no matter how brutal. Yako rarely gives up. Notably, Yako displayed a stubborn resolve during the HAL case, where she forced herself to thoroughly research its creator, Harukawa, in order to find a clue about a password needed to take down its defenses. Even if it meant combing through boxes and boxes of information about his life and taking a trip out to an abandoned facility, Yako worked through it, eventually understanding the reason he made HAL in the first place: to honor a woman he loved. She is often able to discern what people truly feel after talking with them, but is still very much capable of being blindsided by a crafty or seemingly innocent person. Though initially she wishes to repay Neuro and fears his constant threats, throughout the series her motives deviate more and more. She's an extremely protective person at heart, and usually thinks of those around her, especially those in pain, before herself. At least, before food enters the equation. Yako's appetite is often used as a comical gag; the stereotype of a tiny girl with an appetite of a much burlier man. But her hunger, and the moments when it's featured, reveal a different side of Yako. She goes on about the similarities between shrimp and insects to 'unintentionally' get her disgusted friend's food. Her only motivation to get into an elite school was the high class lunches it provided. She doesn't do these things out of malice; instead, her gluttony occasionally takes the place of ambition or even common sense. Yako has more than just a physical dependency on food; it's emotional support, and one that she leans on heavily. It is referenced that her constitution is a product of her mother's destructive culinary skills, and shows that her reliance on food—good food, made by somebody less inclined to obliviously poison people—started at a young age. It is second nature for her to pursue food, above all else. She is also incredibly persuasive, knowing what to say or what buttons need to be pushed. Yako uses this characteristic many times over the course of the manga, most notably to turn enemies into allies. She was able to understand the trauma driving Higuchi—that he felt responsible for driving his parents to suicide—and managed to absolve him of some of that guilt, breaking past literal brainwashing. In Aya's case, she correctly deduced that Aya wanted to be apprehended for her crimes. But perhaps her relationship with Godai is the best example: he originally disliked Yako, claiming at one point that she was just as much of a monster as the demon, but after a few conversations between cases, his feelings shift to amicability. He claims that of the two of them, Neuro is the one that attacks from the outside, but Yako is the ones that gets under their target's skin and 'attacks' from the inside. Neuro influences her heavily, and his constant urging for her to continue to evolve no matter what pays off. Through him, she learns to strive to improve herself, and eventually finds her own drive to succeed. He used her to compensate for his one glaring area of incomprehension: the human mind and heart. She was uniquely suited for this, and his reliance on her allowed and encouraged her to grow towards that ideal “evolved” state. Abilities: It's debatable whether it is an actual ability or not, but Yako's body is shown to be incredibly resilient, easily absorbing blows and taking falls that would kill, cripple, or grievously injure others, such as having her head twisted or being putthrough various painful holds and traps. Her healing rate appears to be accelerated as well; she's never seen to have a wound for more than a day. However, as these can also be chalked up to being overstatements for the sake of humor, despite being present in nearly every single chapter, I’m more than willing to let the Mods decide whether or not to count them as actual 'abilities'. She also has a large appetite, and an incredible constitution. Her stomach can apparently negate weak drugs and poisons. During a chapter where she and Neuro go to a gym during the New Bloodline arc, Yako is shown to have amazing physical capabilities when under duress, moving at high speeds and undergoing great strain when properly motivated (i.e. under threat of grievous bodily harm from Neuro). In the mental area, Yako is shown to have an aptitude for psychology and discerning the motivations of others. She is shown to attend an elite school, indicating that she can be a good student when she bothers to buckle down and apply herself, though she states that she only chose it because of the delicious lunches it provided. CARNIVAL↴ Soul Colour: Peach Ideal Jobs: Line Cook Relevant Experience: As mentioned above Yako's gluttony has driven her to try many, many kinds of food, and after learning to cook to avoid her mother's attempts at cuisine, she's also proven herself highly capable of preparing dishes on the fly. The first time she met Honjou, he had caught a giant fish, which she proceeded to season with what little was available, and eventally turned it into a delicious meal. She's willing to eat just about anything herself, which means no matter what strange ingredients end up coming her way, she will definitely find some method to make it palatable for the more discriminating palates on the payroll. Reason for Joining: Yako willingly joined the Carnival when she found it a few months after Neuro left. With the dubious assurance that he would return as soon as possible, but that the dimensional transfer could lead him back in a matter of days to centuries, Yako sought outside help in minimizing those particular risks. She's working in return for magical aid in stabilizing connections between the Demon World Neuro came from and the Human world. As it's a tall order, she's willing to work several years to have the stabilization done in reasonable increments. SAMPLES↴ 10+ comments --- Yako spent more time in front of the mirror nowadays than she had in all her time in high school combined. Before joining up with this ever-growing, ever-changing band, she had only ever sustained one really notable mark, just past the thin joint of her shoulder; a wicked-looking band of scar tissue, a little wider than two of her fingers at the middle and tapering off into fragmented points. It was a souvenir delivered by way of a tree-limb launched at her by Eleven, at the end of... well, everything. That had been eye-catching enough, in her morning routine. But now she could feel scales brushing the fabric of her pants every time she took a step, had to double-take every time she caught her own gaze in a reflection. More than afraid, she was interested, despite herself. This place was her best bet to shorten the time it might take Neuro to return, but more than that, it gave her a certain level of space from all the atrocities the New Bloodline had committed, and her own fame. She didn't crave mysteries like her partner did, but after actively working as a detective without him for a few months, she had developed an honest interest of her own. So each day brought her something new, here, and the best part of it all was that she got to work with entirely new ingredients. Not all the time, which was a bit of a relief, but frequently enough that she always had something exciting to look forward to when it came time to work. The biggest challenge by far was not eating it all herself, but she managed. Somehow. She hummed cheerfully as she shrugged on her apron, tying it behind her back with nimble fingers and a relaxed slide to her gait. There were always people drifting in and out of the dining areas, so she kept a weathered ear out as she moved to her station and got to work. |
